Water Heater Parts

There are 5 different types of water heaters. These are:

  • A conventional storage tank water heater
  • Tankless (On-demand heater)
  • Hybrid (Heat Pump Water Heater)
  • Solar powered
  • Condensing

A conventional water heater has many components and may be either gas fired or electric.

No matter what type you are working with, each has its own set of serviceable plumbing parts.

Some of the key components of conventional systems are:

Tanks - The tank is the cylinder which holds the water and insulates it as heating is taking place. Water enters through the dip tube which runs from the top to the bottom, then rises as it is heated, being distributed through your home via the discharge pipe.

Shut off valves - In order for an engineer to carry out repairs or install new parts, water will need to be isolated from the tank and heater.

Temperature / pressure release valves - Excessive water pressure or heat within the tank will be released to avoid it becoming unstable.

Sacrificial anode - These are installed in the top of the tank and are designed to corrode before the exposed metal of the tank.

Some of the main gas water heater parts are:

Gas burners - these heat the water from the bottom.

Igniters - to light the burners as gas is supplied.

Gas exhaust flue - this removes the gasses produced by combustion but also acts as a heat transfer system to the water around the flue.

Electric water heaters parts also include:

Heating element - this actually heats the water, there may be one or two elements in the tank.

Thermostat - a thermostat will switch the elements on or off as the water becomes the required temperature or falls below it.
